“Deep calls to deep at the thunder of your floodgates: all your waves and your billows have gone over me.” – Psalm 42, 7-8 Welcome to the month of Tevet! Tevet is often called “the month of contradictions” because while the word “Tevet” shares a root with “tov”, meaning goodness, this month is also known […]
CHESHVAN 5782: moon of living waters // mayim chayyim
Full moon blessings, people. We’re halfway through the month of Cheshvan, which is sometimes called “Marcheshvan” or “bitter Cheshvan” because there are no holidays or festivals (except Shabbat!) It can be a kind of relief after Tishrei, a month that is so extra in terms of holidays. Cheshvan rolls with scorpio energy. Where I live, […]

ELUL 5781: moon of reflection, belonging, & becoming
August / September 2021 Welcome to Elul, sweet friends. Rosh Chodesh Elul (the new moon/first day of the Jewish month of Elul) marks exactly 40 days until Yom Kippur. The letters of the word ‘Elul’ – aleph, lamed, vav, lamed– is an acronym of “Ani l’dodi v’dodi li,” “I am my beloved’s and my beloved […]
AV 5781: moon of weeping, fasting, grieving, dancing, loving
July/August 2021 Happy new moon! Welcome to the month of Av. Where I live, we are experiencing intense rains, as well as intense heat, and my garden is wild and busting out. The garlic I planted last fall is now almost as tall as me, waving yellowing ribbons in the heat, flagging that those spicy […]
SIVAN 5781: Moon of Blossoming Revelation / Moon of Milk and Honey
May/June 2021 Sivan, which can be translated as “season” or “time” in Akkadian (an ancient semitic pre-Aramaic language), can also mean “muddy”–speaking to the dirt-based realities of the agricultural cycles that our ancestors danced in. In the wheel of the year, Nisan (the month of Passover), marks the season of our birth/rebirth/liberation, Iyar is a […]
NISAN 5781 : MOON OF BUDS, BIRTH, & BRILLIANCE
March/April 2021Welcome to Nisan! The word Nisan relates to the word “nitzan” ~ meaning bud, and may also relate to the Hebrew word, “nees” ~ miracle. Nisan is a clenched fist of petals and possibility, an anticipation of the miracle that is flowers. Nisan flings the doors open to life. The light is stretching out, […]
ADAR 5781: Moon of Shameless Joy & Aliveness in the Face of Empire
February/March 2021 We have entered the month of Adar, and we are now arching towards a gorgeous full Purim moon this weekend. We learn in the Talmud, “As soon as Adar has entered, we increase in joy.” This year, I’m wondering what kind of joy we can cultivate and how can this holiday support us […]
SHVAT 5781: Moon of Interdependence
January/February 2021 As we enter this new moon and this month of Shvat, I’m reaching for all the things that help me stay connected to life, to purpose, to the north star of liberation and healing for everyone. In this moment of acute upheaval, nestled in a wider time field of collapse, I also find […]
